canelo 07By Chris Williams: If Floyd Mayweather Jr. does indeed go with IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander as his next opponent on May 4th in Las Vegas, then Floyd is going to need WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on the undercard than before if Mayweather wants to make sure his pay per view numbers are high for the HBO televised fight card.

Picking Alexander, who is only popular in his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri, is going to be huge buzzkill for boxing fans because they were hoping Mayweather would fight someone with a reason exciting fighting style or big name.

The opponent that Mayweather had been rumored to be facing WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero may not be a popular fighter, but he’s got a high pressure style of fighting that would be make it entertaining for the full 12 rounds. Guerrero would get the most of Mayweather by forcing him to fight hard in order to win.

Guerrero is also of Mexican descent and that would really help the May 4th fight card because it’s taking place on the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo weekend, and there will be a lot of Mexican boxing fans wanting to see a good fight. It’s not likely that these same fans will be interested in paying $60 to watch Mayweather fight Devon Alexander.

If Mayweather isn’t pulling everyone’s leg with his comments about possibly facing Alexander on May 4th, then Mayweather is going to need to do whatever he can to get Canelo on the undercard so that he can get the Mexican boxing fans to purchase the fight on PPV.

If Mayweather has to agree to fight Canelo in September in order for him to get Canelo to agree to fight on his May 4th undercard, then he needs to do it. Mayweather will also need to make sure Canelo is put in with a soft touch because if they match him against WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout, it could mess things up by Canelo losing to him.

Canelo is popular but terribly flawed as a fighter, and Trout would likely make him look bad if that fight takes place. Mayweather needs to make sure Canelo continues to be matched softly like he’s been his entire career so that he comes out of the May 4th fight still unbeaten.
