Mayweather: I still don’t know who I’ll be fighting on May 4th

floyd4By Chris Williams: Last Saturday night, Floyd Mayweather Jr. attended the Golden Boy Promoted fight card at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada to see lightweight Mickey Bey Jr. and some other prospects fights. Mayweather was asked by Doug Fisher who he plans on fighting next on May 4th, and Mayweather said he’s still not sure who his opponent will be.

It’s hard to believe that because there’s talk that Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer is putting the finishing touches on finalizing his opponent for that fight card. One name that Mayweather Jr. did mention is Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, and he dropped a pretty big hint that he could be facing him on May 4th.

Mayweather said “In 2013, I’ll be fighting twice. May 4th, Cinco de Mayo, of course. We like to call it May-per-view because I’m performing, and I have so many record-breaking performances, but I’m happy. I can’t do it without the fans. It takes so long to build up a pay per view fight. We don’t know who the opponent is yet, but I’m pretty sure it’s going to be an exciting opponent, and we’re going to go out there and do it in great fashion. I don’t know too much about [Robert] Guerrero, but it’s obvious that he has done something thus far for his name to be mentioned in the ranks of mine, but I can’t overlook no opponent. Whoever I go in there to face, I must prepare myself like I always do, mentally and physically and push myself to the limit.”

The only reason Guerrero’s name is being mentioned as a potential opponent for Mayweather is because Guerrero is his mandatory challenger, he’s been talking endlessly about wanting the fight with Mayweather, and he’s a lesser threat than Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, the fighter that Golden Boy badly wants to see Mayweather Jr. fight on May 4th.

Golden Boy promotes Canelo, so it’s in their interest to try and make a Mayweather-Canelo fight as soon as possible before Canelo or Mayweather gets beat by someone. Most of the other top welterweights in the division have already been beaten and exposed, and the ones that haven’t aren’t worth fighting for lack of a name.

Mayweather obviously knows who his opponent will be on May 4th, but he’s going to wait until just the right moment to give his name. Guerrero isn’t a great fight, but he’ll likely help boost the PPV numbers by getting Mexican boxing fans interested in watching him fight Mayweather.
