Mayweather-Guerrero: Do you believe in Ghosts?

guerrero41By Bill Mitchell: While it’s usually Floyd Mayweather (43-0, 26 KO’s) who hypes the fight, six time champion Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs), wasted no time firing the first shot in his upcoming fight with Floyd Mayweather. Guerrero, in a phone interview with AP, began trash talking the champion by saying he observed slippage in Mayweather. That his legs are slowing down at 36 years of age and that he picks and chooses his opponents. Guerrero also suggested fans can earn a lot of money by wagering on him with the high odds being given in Las Vegas. Recently, Guerrero tweeted to Mayweather “hope u liked working corners I’m gonna make it permanent pretty boy! The fans want it 70 days left buddy”

Guerrero’s convinced Mayweather doesn’t realize what he’s getting into. That with Mayweather’s recent stint in jail and being out of the ring for a year, he’ll have too much ring rust to deal with Guererro’s aggressive style . Guerrero also said, and this is a quote “I was put in this position not only to humble the boxing world, but to humble Floyd Mayweather. I have a lot of faith that I’m going to go in there and dominate this fight.”

You have to wonder if Guererro’s confidence is misguided. As I said in a previous article, Mayweather has what I call “ring genius” He out thinks his opponents. He seems to know what they’re going to do before they do it. He also hits harder than anybody imagines. If you think I’m wrong look back to the Shane Mosley fight. After buckling Mayweather twice in the second round, in the next round Mayweather struck Mosley hard both to the body and head.

By the fourth round, a hard right sent Mosley into retreat for the remainder of the fight. That’s what happens to most of Floyd’s opponents. They decide it’s safer to be more defensive to get thru the fight. They realize they’re out of their league and it’s better to try and make it thru the fight rather than be humiliated They never expected Mayweather to be as strong as he is. They all end up dazed and confused seemingly hypnotized by Mayweather. But it’s skill and power that makes them reticent.

Some may disagree with me about the power because Mayweathers KO record would be higher if that were true. But Mayweather’s a counter-puncher and once he backs them off he’s satisfied to just go for the win unless the opportunity presents its self. For example, Ricky Hatton or Victor Ortiz.

Come May 5th Robert Guerrero will have the opportunity to back up his words. You get the impression Guerrero is hard headed and stubborn. He certainly has the credentials and fought his way here. But to the contrary of what Guerrero said, I’m convinced it’s Robert who doesn’t realize what he’s getting into.
