By Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Robert Diaz is reporting that they are on the verge of announcing the May 4th fight card headlined by Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, and WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Golden Boy offered Canelo other opponents besides Trout, but Canelo insisted on facing the tougher Trout.
The announcement for the card is days away. They obviously have to do this as soon as possible because it’s already mid-February, and if they want this to be a huge pay per view card then they’re going to have to start marketing it soon as they can.
It’s unclear whether HBO or Showtime will be televising the card, for how much. Given that Mayweather and Canelo are both on the card, Golden Boy might ask for more money than the normal Mayweather fight.
The Trout-Canelo fight appears to be the much better fight compared to Guerrero-Mayweather because there’s a possibility Canelo could get exposed in this fight. You’ve got a fighter that’s young at 22 in Canelo, and who has been sheltered by Golden Boy all these years. You just don’t know what Canelo can actually do because he’s been mainly fighting welterweights, and weak ones at that.
What’s going to happen now that Canelo is finally being put in with an actual junior middleweight? Not only is Canelo being put in with a 154 lb. fighter in Trout, but it’s also one that can fight at a high level. Trout could ruin Golden Boy’s big money hopes for Canelo if he beats him. Golden Boy would still likely turn Canelo into a big star, but it require more soft match-making like they’ve been doing for him that last few years.
Guerrero isn’t an appealing opponent, but there’s not much to pick from at 147. Manny Pacquiao is losing left and right, and it’s a fight that will likely never be made, and the rest of the welterweights are pretty mediocre. Guerrero is about as good as there is at 147 right now when you subtract Pacquiao, and it’s just disappointing how weak the division is right now. They need some new blood at 147, but unfortunately there isn’t anyone on the horizon that’s ready to step in.
