Marquez will be taking a gamble fighting Pacquiao in Asia

marquez73By Chris Williams: Bob Arum of Top Rank and Manny Pacquiao are interested in taking their next fight with Juan Manuel Marquez outside of the United States to Asia in order to avoid paying high U.S taxes on the pay per view money that comes from the American boxing fans. Arum says it’s 39%, and he wants to stage Pacquiao’s next fight in Macau, which is a region in China.

If this move will truly allow Arum and Pacquiao a way to avoid paying the taxes they get from the money from American boxing fans then it sounds like a smart move. It might not be a good idea for the 39-year-old Marquez, though. He’s already arguably been jobbed three times in fights against Pacquiao in the U.S, and if he fights in Asia, it might be a risky thing for Marquez.

Marquez already lost a fight to Chris John in Indonesia in 2006 a fight that Marquez completely dominated from start to finish. I’ve seen that fight several times, and I had Marquez winning 11 rounds to 1 each time. The judges scored it 116-110, 117-111 and 116-112 for John.

Those weren’t even close scores for a fight that John was completely dominated in. If you flip flopped the winner and gave Marquez the victory, those scores would be still way too close to what actually happened in the ring that night. Marquez TOTALLY dominated John and it was just sick to see John given the victory.

If Arum and Pacquiao want to avoid paying taxes with the money they get from the U.S, then they should pick a neutral country instead of Asia. Pacquiao is Asian, and he has two controversial victories over Marquez as well as a controversial draw that Marquez appeared to win as well. Why should Marquez agree to fight Pacquiao in Asia? Why not make it South America? Arum could stage the fight in Colombia, Brazil or Argentina, if not Mexico.

If that’s going to be one of the conditions for fighting Pacquiao again, then Marquez should say no if he wants to avoid any potential problems. It might not matter, of course, if he knocks Pacquiao out cold, but you don’t like to be putting the cards in Pacquiao’s favor right off the bat by staging the fight in an Asian country.

If Arum gives Marquez enough money, I’m sure he’ll probably yes to fighting Pacquiao in Asia, but I hope Marquez doesn’t complain about it afterwards if he ends up losing by a controversial decision because he has to know that him losing by a controversial decision is par for the course by agreeing to fight Pacquiao in Asia.
