Marquez says no to Pacquiao rematch

marquez675By Chris Williams: Juan Manuel Marquez (55-6-1, 40 KO’s) dropped the ball on Manny Pacquiao’s hopes of a September rematch with the Mexican warrior by saying no to the fight, according to fightnews.com. Marquez doesn’t see any reason to fight Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO’s) again after having proven himself to be superior than the Filipino fighter in their four fights.

Marquez said this as quoted by Fightnews.com from Golpe a Golpe “I think for me there is no point. The business that we had pending is already settled, so then for what? I’ve asked several people, several friends that I have around me and they tell me no, in no case a fifth fight…before the fourth bout, I said regardless of how this fight ends, there cannot be a fifth.”

So there it is. Marquez slams the door shut tightly in the face of a rematch with Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum. This has got to hurt badly Pacquiao getting a chance to fight Marquez again to show that his knockout loss was just a fluke thing. It wasn’t. Marquez blasted Pacquiao to the canvas twice, and that’s not luck.

One knockdown is luck, but not two. When you get knocked down twice then that shows you that Marquez was the superior fighter last December, and in my view he proved that he was the superior fighter in all four fights. He got jobbed three times, and finally he said to himself ‘enough, I’m not going to let the referees take my wins away from me anymore.’

At that point Marquz made up his mind that he was going to have to knock the highly popular Pacquiao out so that he couldn’t get up again and win another controversial decision that the boxing public disagrees with.

I don’t blame Marquez one bit for choosing not to fight Pacquiao again because he’d only be putting himself into another situation where he might need a knockout to win, and who needs that? That would mean that Marquez would have to be head hutting from round one on just to make sure that he didn’t wind up losing another decision that he deserved to win.

Arum is probably going to try and convince Marquez to change his mind about this. It’s almost a given that he’s going to do this and one of the ways he’ll attempt this is by offering him a much bigger cut than he got last time. Pacquiao was given $25 million to Marquez’s $3 million last December in terms of a guaranteed purse.

I can see Arum offering Marquez a little bit more, but no way would it be a 50-50 deal or anything close to that. That’s not going to happen. At best, I see Arum offering Marquez a $10 million guaranteed purse plus the upside from pay per view. For Pacquiao’s part, he’d likely get a guaranteed purse of $30 million.

In other words, Pacquiao would get much, much more than Marquez just as always. In addition to that, Marquez might have to agree to random blood testing for the fight because that’s something you could expect Arum to insist upon for a fifth fight between Pacquiao and Marquez. As such, Marquez wouldn’t get anything close to a 50-50 purse split, and he’d still have to agree to random blood testing. Forget that. I don’t blame Marquez for saying no way to a rematch because it wouldn’t be worth it because he likely wouldn’t get that much more money than last time.
