Marquez is doing Pacquiao a favor by not fighting him again

pac45By Chris Williams: Ever since Juan Manuel Marquez said he had no interest in fighting Manny Pacquiao for a fifth fight, Pacquiao’s fans have been deeply upset by this with many of them thinking Marquez is ducking Pacquiao for fear of being caught by the random blood tests that his team might choose to implement for the rematch.

Some of Pacquiao’s fans think Marquez is just plain scared of losing again to him, while others see it as a selfish move by Marquez. I don’t believe it’s any of those things. I think Marquez is simply tired of fighting Pacquiao after having proven that he’s the better fighter in their four fights. It’s like beating your little brother in checkers.

He’ll keep pushing you to play him again so that he can win, but you keep beating him to the point where it’s no longer interesting to play. I think it’s that way with Marquez. He’s beaten Pacquiao so many times, and been jobbed on three of the occasions. Marquez has already proven that he’s the better fighter than Pacquiao, so there’s no point in him beating him once more.

Generally speaking, Marquez is doing Pacquiao a big favor by not fighting him again because if he faces him again and knocks him cold, he could really hurt the Filipino and that loss would be the final nail on Pacquiao’s career.

I don’t know that he’ll retire because I kind of agree with what Dan Rafael of ESPN feels will happen with Pacquiao. He thinks Pacquiao will keep fighting long after his skills have eroded, and I see it that way too.

I agree with Rafael. I think Pacquiao will continue to fight, and Arum will continue to make his fights pay per view, even when he’s losing every time he fights. But by Marquez not fighting Pacquiao, he’s doing him a big favor because he’s really saving him a vicious knockout.

It’s better not to fight Pacquiao so that his promoter Arum can keep him as a big star for a lot longer by matching him against his Top Rank stable fighters Tim Bradley, Brandon Rios, and whoever Arum signs on to his Top Rank team to be one of Pacquiao’s opponents in the future.
