Kell Brook: I’m feeling gutted right now

brook45453By Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated welterweight Kell Brook (29-0, 19 KO’s) got some bad news earlier today about IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (24-1, 13 KO’s) suffering a bicep injury that will delay their February 23rd fight.

Depending on how badly Alexander’s injury it is, we could be looking at the fight being delayed many months, especially if it’s a torn bicep like then one former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto suffered on two occasions.

Brook said on his twitter “Can’t put into words how gutted I am.”

It must be bad for Brook because he’s already been training like a mad man for many months as it is, and if he keeps training the way he’s been, he might be just skin and bones by the time the fight actually takes place. As it is, Brook looks more like a cycling athlete than a boxer. He’s really stripped down every ounce of fat on his body and it looks damn unhealthy to me.

Brook needs to put on a few more pounds and take it easy for a while because it could be many months before Alexander’s bicep heals. With a bicep injury, you just never know if there’s going to be an additional injury if Alexander starts training too soon. I previously injured one of my biceps when I was doing curls and it took ages for the injury to heal right.

The injury time off may help Brook if he backs off his furious training and lets his body rest because I think he would have lost badly if he went into the February 23rd fight looking like he is now.

Alexander is too skilled, and if he has a fighter in front of him who isn’t at his best, he’s going to totally dominate him. This time off could help Brook if he’s smart about it, and rests as much as possible before their fight takes place at some point this year. Unfortunately I don’t see that happening. I think Brook will continue training at a feverish pace and end up losing his fight against Alexander in the gym instead of the ring.
