Kell Brook: I want a tune-up if the Alexander fight is moved to May

brook122By Scott Gilfoid: Britain’s Kell Brook (29-0, 19 KO’s) says he’s going to ask the International Boxing Federation for permission to take a tune-up bout if his title challenge against IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (24-1, 13 KO’s) gets pushed to May. Brook is concerned about getting rusty while he’s waiting for the fight to happen, so he wants to get a tune-up bout to stay sharp.

Brook said to BoxNation.com “If the fight against Alexander is moved to May then it is too long, because I am ready to go. If that is true I would like to ask the IBF if I can have a ten round warm up to get all this frustration out. I have been training for 13 weeks for the fight of my life and even had a nutritionist living with me in a hotel.”

I kind of doubt the IBF will allow Brook permission to slip in a tune-up bout. He’s under contract to fight Alexander, so if Brook slips in a fight against a mediocre opponent, kind of like the guys he’s been fighting for much of his 9 years as a pro, then there’s a chance Brook could get injured and that would mess up his May fight with Alexander.

I don’t care how bad the opponent is, Brook would still be running the risk of injury if he took a tune-up bout, and that mess things up royally because he’d waste even more time. Brook has already caused one delay of the Alexander fight by suffering an ankle injury, and now Alexander has a right biceps injury that has thrown off their even more.

Brook needs to chill out and stay cool for a while. Hopefully he still doesn’t need a dietician with him 24/7 to monitor his eating because he should know by now what foods to eat and not to eat.

At the end of the day Brook could be working himself up to a high state of anxiety over all of this for nothing because if he gets spanked by Alexander badly, then what’s the point? He’d have wasted his nerves away for nothing in a fight that he couldn’t win. That being said, I just hope Brook doesn’t start slinging the excuses afterwards, blaming his loss on the two injury delays.

I hate when fighters start blaming things like delays in the fight happening as the reason for them getting beaten because that doesn’t make sense. You either have the talent to win or you don’t. Making excuses afterwards just makes you look like someone that can’t come to terms with the fact that you don’t have the talent to win in the first place.
