chavez5434By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) turns 27-years-old today as he sits and waits to find out what his suspension and fine will be for testing positive for marijuana last September in his one-sided 12 round decision loss to Sergio Martinez.

This month, Chavez Jr. is expected to find out this money what the Nevada State Athletic Commission will be doing in of penalizing him. If Chavez Jr. is lucky, they’ll just give him a short suspension and fine.

The suspension will likely be completely served out by the time Chavez Jr. sees action likely in the summer. Any suspension he gets will be start from the right after his fight because he was automatically suspended by the Commission.

By the time Chavez Jr. does return to the ring to fight it’ll be 9 to 12 months since he last fought, and for a fighter that is already struggling badly to make the 160 pound weight limit for the middleweight division, it might be the tipping point to where he’ll be too weak to fight at a high level.

Chavez Jr. had problems with feeling weak in the legs in his fights with Marco Antonio Rubio, Andy Lee and Martinez because of the huge amount of weight he had to take off to make weight. Just moving up 20+ pounds of water has got to be incredibly hard on Chavez Jr’s body given that it’s done in such a short period of time.

If Chavez Jr. was thinking he might want to forget about the rematch with Sergio Martinez, and instead move up to either super middleweight [168 lbs] or preferably light heavyweight [175 lbs]. With Chavez Jr. weighing in between 180 to 190 when he fights, it’s possible for him to fight in either 168 or the 175 lb. divisions. However, with the high number of talented fighters at 168, Chavez Jr. would be much better off moving up to 175 because that’s a really weak division right now compared to at 168.
