Is “GGG” ready for “Maravilla”?

golovkin22By Gibran Samad: WBA middleweight champion Gennaady Golovkin (25-0, 22 KO’s) first burst on the scene in America last year and made his HBO debut against Grzegorz Proska. He stalked and unleashed massive blows to Proska, knocking him down 5 times before finally defeating him by TKO in the 5th round.

Right after his win, people said things like “There’s a monster in the Middleweight Division! or “Sergio Maretinez better watch out!”. Last month GGG won by TKO against a game Gabriel Rosado and again the talks of Martinez came into play. But is Golovkin really ready for Martinez? GGG has never fought anyone as fast and slick as Martinez before. One thing GGG can do for sure is cut the ring off on Martinez and stalk his way through. But remember someone else that did the same thing against Martinez?

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and what happened to him? For about 11 rounds Sergio boxed and outclassed Chavez using his crafty footwork and speed. If GGG and Maravilla fought, GGG would be the aggressive one coming forward while Maravilla counter punches, moves around, and potshots. Martinez is also a southpaw, which has exposed Golovkin for being to open to left hands.

Despite destroying Proska, a southpaw, GGG was still eating a couple left hands on his way in, imagine him getting hit with lefts from Martinez, someone who can punch with speed, accuracy, and lots of power.

Overall I believe Gennady Golovkin needs some more fights to secure a skillful game plan to defeat Martinez if the two warriors ever met in the ring, after all, he’s only had 2 fights in America. So in the meanwhile as we watch GGG fight other opposition and Maravilla do the same, we should ask ourselves this question: Is “GGG” ready for “Maravilla”?
