By Scott Gilfoid: Eddie Hearn, the promoter for Gavin Rees, is under the impression that Rees wowed HBO and the American boxing fans with his 5th round TKO loss to WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner last Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Hearn believes HBO and the U.S fans came away impressed with Rees’ performance in getting dropped twice by Broner, and having his trainer pull him out quickly in the 5th round when things were looking bleak for Rees.
Hearn said to I Film London “Already we’re hearing HBO and American fans ‘Oh, we love Gavin Rees. We’d love to have him back. So that opens plenty of doors. So Gavin is in a great position now. He’s in a much better position now than what he was before the fight…You come; you make a lot of friends. Sky loved it, HBO loved it, fans loved it.”
I don’t know if there are different standards for what impresses boxing fans in the UK compared to in the U.S, but as far as I’m concerned, Rees looked terrible, and I personally don’t want to see him fight again after that performance. Gosh, I’m hoping HBO doesn’t choose to shove him down the throats of U.S fans because there’s got someone better than this.
If HBO represents quality television in terms of putting on the best fights, then I would hope to see better match-ups than the one we saw last Saturday night between Broner and Rees because that was a dreadful fight.
I don’t know who at HBO Hearn is talking about that was impressed with Rees’ performance, but I’m thinking maybe Hearn misunderstand them. Americans are very kind people, and they’ll tell you the opposite of what they’re feeling at times out of kindness and sympathy. That’s how American are. Perhaps Hearn misunderstood the love for Rees that he heard from HBO and American fans, and mistook sympathy for actual appreciation.
The only feeling I had watching Rees’ performance was ‘’Wow, this guy is really getting smacked around. I hope he doesn’t get hurt. Can’t HBO do better than this.’ Those were some of my thoughts that were floating around my head as I was watching the Broner-Rees fight last Saturday night. It was like watching a car wreck that you couldn’t turn your eyes away from. But no, I wasn’t impressed at all. I kind of felt sorry for Rees, especially when his girlfriend got up and walked out when he was really starting to get thrashed by Broner.
