Guerrero: Mayweather’s slowing down; he’s ripe for the picking

guerrero342By Dan Ambrose: WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) believes that the people who bet on him winning against unbeaten WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) in their May 4th fight on pay-per-view are going to make money because he intends on beating Mayweather soundly in front of what will likely be a huge MGM Grand crowd in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Guerrero said this as quoted by Dan Rafael “It’s great for people who bet & it’s great for people who will bet on me because they will make money. Odds don’t mean nothing to me because at the end of the day you still gotta get in there and fight. I see him [Mayweather] slowing down. [he’s] ripe for the picking. I’m pumped; I can’t wait to show why I am the best fighter in the world.”

It’s hard to see Guerrero as being anything close to the best fighter in the world. He’s a good fighter, but he’s not on my list when I’m thinking of the top 50 fighters in boxing.

Mayweather is definitely slowing down as we saw in his last fight against Miguel Cotto last year in May, but that wasn’t a good performance from Mayweather and he looked old in that fight. But Guerrero doesn’t have Cotto’s power, and he doesn’t have his jab either.

Guerrero will have problems because he’s so easy to hit, and he doesn’t have the physical tools to give Mayweather the same kinds of problems that Cotto did last May. Guerrero is more like a busy puncher that slaps his opponents for 12 rounds. At featherweight, Guerrero was a pretty good puncher, but his power didn’t carry up with him when he moved up to 147.

Mayweather is ready to be beaten, but I don’t think Guerrero has enough talent to beat him. It’s going to take someone else like Manny Pacquiao to do it because there are not a lot of talented fighters at 147 right now. Guerrero looked decent in beating Selcuk Aydin and Andre Berto, but those are pretty limited fighters, and nowhere near as good as Mayweather.
