Fury: The TV networks turned down Deontay Wilder & Bryant Jennings as possible opponents

fury544By Scott Gilfoid: #4 WBC heavyweight contender Tyson Fury (20-0, 14 KO’s) is saying one of the television networks in the United States turned down both Deontay Wilder and Bryant Jennings as an opponent for his April 20th fight in New York. Fury says they only wanted 36-year-old Tomasz Adamek or 36-year-old Steve Cunningham (25-5, 12 KO’s). Fury and #12 IBF Cunningham will be fighting on April 20th.

Fury said BaylorIC TV “It’s [Cunningham] to show the American people I’m the real deal and just a joke.”

Fury then went on a long rant, constantly changing subjects, blabbing about how he’s not being given a shot against the Klitschko brothers, and how he still won’t get a shot even if he beats Cunningham.

I’m sorry but a victory over Cunningham won’t show the American people Fury is the real deal because Cunningham is a blown up cruiserweight, who has lost three out of his last four fights. How do you show the American public anything when the guy you’re facing is a 205 lb. fighter who has lost three out of his last five fights? What will Fury prove other than he can beat struggling smaller fighters.

Fury said “I only get the opponents nobody else wants to fight. They turned down Deontay Wilder, they turned down Bryant Jennings; The TV turned them all down. They said the only ones you can fight is [Tomasz] Adamek or Cunningham, and Adamek wasn’t willing.”

I don’t buy what Fury is saying about Wilder and Jennings being turned down by the television networks. No way would they turn down a higher ranked fighter with much more power than Cunningham. Can you picture what it would like with the huge 6’7” Deontay facing the 6’9” Fury? What television in the U.S would turn down the fight?

Wilder would be big trouble for Fury, and I can’t see any television network, be it HBO, Showtime, ESPN2 or NBC turning down that fight because it would be gold. Now, a fight between Fury and Cunningham is a pure stinker, and if the NBC television executives asked for this fight then I think they need to follow the sport a little closer because Cunningham has been struggling big time in the past two years. Why throw an aging cruiserweight in with Fury unless the idea is to make Fury look better than he actually is.
