calzaghe53454By Scott Gilfoid: IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch believes that he’s accomplished more in his career than former super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe. Froch feels he’s faced the better competition overall and taken more risks.

Froch said to the telegraph.co.uk “I’ve fought more unbeaten fighters…I’m taking unbeaten people’s scalps and fighting at a higher level. Calzaghe has two or three names which stand out on his record.”

It hurts Froch’s case that he was beaten by Mikkel Kessler, a fighter that Calzaghe beat in 2007 by a 12 round unanimous decision when Kessler was at his best. However, Froch definitely has faced the better overall competition than Calzaghe, so you have to give him that.

Unfortunately, Froch was beaten by the best guys he’s fought in Kessler and Andre Ward, and arguably he should have been beaten by Andre Dirrell. Froch was also almost beaten by Jermain Taylor in 2009 and came within seconds of losing that fight.

I’m not so high on Calzaghe’s legacy because resume is filled with fodder opposition, but right now you have to consider Calzaghe’s legacy, such as it is, is better than Froch’s. The only way that Froch can change that is if he beats Kessler in May, defeats Andre Ward in a rematch, and then faces Dirrell and beats him without controversy.

I don’t see that happening in this lifetime, so it’s pointless for Froch to flap his gums about his legacy unless he’s able to beat those three fighters. I don’t think Froch can even accomplish two-thirds of that task because Dirrell, Kessler and Ward all have Froch’s number.

In the same interview, Froch compared himself to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Roy Jones Jr., pointing out that those great fighters still receives criticism despite having accomplished big things in their career. For this reason, Froch feels he’ll still get criticized even if he runs the table and beats Ward and Kessler.
