Froch: It could be over for me if I lose to Kessler

froch92By Scott Gilfoid: IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch thinks it could potentially be the end of his career if he gets badly beaten by WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler in their important fight on May 25th in the 17,000 seat O2 Arena in London, UK.

Froch has his doubts about whether he or Kessler could come back from a loss in this fight, and he’s probably right. A big loss for Froch or Kessler will send them back to a contender status and likely cause a lot of boxing fans to lose interest in them.

Froch said to thesun.co.uk “I think it’s the end for the loser. Depending on how the fight goes, I don’t think Kessler would come back after a loss — and I am pretty sure that I wouldn’t either. For me, I need to win this fight… I will do everything in my power to make sure I avenge my loss to Kessler.”

Froch said something similar before his fight against former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute last year in May, and before his fight against Arthur Abraham in November 2010. In both cases, Froch was able to win the fights in dominating fashion despite his retirement threats. Who knows? Maybe Froch needs to have a retirement thing hanging over his head in order to make him fight at high level.

All I know is he’s said it more than once and he’s done well in the fights where he was making the threat/promise or whatever it was. Personally, I think it was just Froch flapping his gums to draw interest in the fight. It’s like a business putting a “Going out of business” sign on the front door of the store, but instead of going out of business they’re really “Going out for business” to attract more customers.

I think Froch is doing that, but I do believe his career will be in serious trouble if Kessler beats him bad or knocks him out. I mean, I think his British fans would still flock to see him in high numbers in Nottingham, England, but he’d have to be selective in who he faces for a world title because if he takes the hard path towards a rematch with Ward, he could be put out of his misery by him.

I believe Froch could still beat WBO champion Arthur Abraham if he get him to fight him, but I don’t see that happening in a million years. Froch would likely have to work his way to a mandatory position before Abraham fought him, and by then Abraham might not be the champion anymore. It could be George Groves.
