Frampton: I’ll fight Quigg one of these days

frampton88By Scott Gilfoid: EBU super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton (16-0, 11 KO’s) didn’t exactly sound motivated when he was asked last night if he would be interested in fighting interim WBA super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg in his next fight.

The look on Frampton’s face spoke volumes, as he immediately froze for a second before he finally spit out this answer: “Hopefully we’ll fight one of these days. It’s what the British people want; it’s bigger than [David] Price – [Tyson] Fury.”

At that point in the conversation, Frampton was quickly cut off by his promoter Eddie Hearn, who started getting animated, saying this and that about how Frampton is a huge star and how he sells out arenas. Hearn ended his frantic monologue with these words “Scott Quigg needs Frampton, that’s the difference.”

To break all this down to the layman, what we were basically hearing was that Frampton doesn’t seem eager to fight the hard hitting Quigg, and his promoter Hearn doesn’t seem to fancy the job either.

That’s kind of funny, but yet sad at the same time. Frampton struggles through a tough fight against Kiko Martinez, knocks him out with a lucky right hand punch in the 9th round, and his fans and promoter Hearn start crowning him prematurely as the superstar of the super bantamweight division, ignoring the fact that Frampton had looked god awful through much of the fight with his clinching and running.

Then when asked if he’s willing to face an even better fighter than Kiko Martinez, Frampton gives the old “one of these days” lines. If you’ve ever heard that line in your life from a fried or perhaps a women friend, it generally means “yeah, we’ll get together one of these days, like never.”

Believe me, it’s never good when someone gives your that line because it often means ‘we’re not going to see each other, so get don’t get your hopes up.’ That line is generally the kiss of death when you receive it. If I was Quigg, I’d just forget all about Frampton from this point on because he said his thing with that line, and there’s no point in wasting anymore time with trying to get a fight with him.

If you’re Hearn and Frampton, it’s understandable why it might not be a good idea for them to face Quigg because the guy is a clear step up from Kiko Martinez, and probably a huge step up. Quigg is stronger, faster, and a better fighter than Martinez. Frampton could very well lose to Quigg, even if he runs, holds, and ducks below the waist all night long like he did against Martinez. Those tricks probably wouldn’t work out too well against Quigg and I think it would end badly for Frampton. But with him giving the old “One of these days” line, Frampton won’t have to experience the risk involved with facing Quigg, will he?
