Floyd’s decisions: Some are never happy

mayweather4565By Robert Elmore: Saul Alvarez recent demands that Floyd sign a contract to fight him in September or he would not be on the May 4th undercard made me laugh. What is even more laughable is that boxing fans (mainly Mayweather haters) seem to flip flop at every turn. When the idea of Canelo fighting Floyd came up, it was “Who has Canelo fought? What has he done to get a shot at Floyd”?

Floyd not signing is very smart. For one, this shows that he’s not looking past Robert Guerrero. Two, this forces Canelo to fight someone legitimate in his own division (WBA champ Austin Trout). But now, some are saying Floyd is scared of Canelo. Either Canelo hasn’t fought anybody or Floyd is scared. Which one is it?

Robert Guerrero has been calling out Floyd Mayweather for over a year. He’s became Floyd’s mandatory challenger after defeating Seluck Aydin and becoming the WBC interim champion. The boxing world has mixed feelings. To many fans, Guerrero is a bum and cherry picked by Floyd. The other half feels that he is a legitimate threat to Floyd. But when Floyd tweeted that he would be fighting IBF champ Devon Alexander, the world went nuts. All of sudden Floyd is ducking The Ghost and the names followed. When the smoke cleared and Robert was announced, it quickly went back to Floyd is a cherry picker.
One knows Floyd’s skills has elevated to another status when the public starts to demand he fights a middleweight. Enter Sergio Martinez.

Yes, Floyd did say he was interested in fighting Sergio, but I did not take it seriously. However, the public wants to see it. But let’s get one thing straight. For those who claim that Martinez is a true 154 pounder, he is not. If he were, he would be fighting at 154. He moved from that weight 3 years ago. He is the WBC Middleweight Champion of the World. I don’t think he could comfortably make 154 and perform at a high level. If the fight did happen, there is no doubt that the excuse would be the weight. Sergio should keep fighting middleweights and stop chasing welterweights.

It doesn’t matter what Floyd does some will never be happy. If he defeats Guerrero, to many he will be labeled a bum or easy pickings for Floyd. But I guarantee you, if Floyd loses, boxing forums and every boxing site will full. There is no easy fight. All it takes is one punch and everything can change as we saw on December 8th of last year. It’s just that Floyd makes it look easy by making adjustments and executes his game plan. But the fact still remains that he is undefeated and some people can’t deal with that.
