By Tony Crooks: Hype and trash talking have become a part of the daily life of today’s boxers. Not all follow this path; however, calling out fellow gentlemen of the Queensbury rules has become rife.
In days gone by if a challenge was made by a particular boxer, the challenge would be met and the fight would take place. I guess that you could call that trash talking in the old days, the difference is that in the old days, the fights actually happened.
It would be so easy to have Price Vs Wilder or Fury Vs Price or Wilder Vs Fury, but sadly it never happens. So why does all of this calling out take place in the first instance? The promoters could make these matches if they wanted, but they choose otherwise.
What should happen is there should be a mandatory competition where the governing boxing bodies all get together and make these fighters face each other, there are at least eight heavyweight fringe contenders out there to have a tournament.
Even if you work on the format of a golf match play event, once one contender is eliminated, he moves forward to the next round. At the end, there is only one winner and he should be the one that gets the title shot. It would take around a year to sort out who is supreme and who should have had the respect to know their own limitations in the first instance.
It is not what a man speaks of that has any bearing; it is what that man does that defines him as a man.
