By Scott Gilfoid: Super middleweight Andre Dirrell (20-1, 14 KO’s) wants to make 2013 a really busy one so that he can make a move towards Carl Froch’s IBF super middleweight title. The first part of the plan to get to Froch will be the talented Dirrell’s scheduled eight round fight on Saturday night against Michael Gbenga (14-6, 14 KO’s) at the Convention Center, in McAllen, Texas, USA.
If Dirrell can get past Gbenga with an early KO, he plans on coming back in March to get in another quick fight.
Dirrell said to mlive.com “If I can get this guy out of here maybe in the first couple of rounds we’re looking to come back with a March 1st or March 6th date. I want to fight as much as possible these years to come, so I will be a very busy mane these coming years.”
I’m sure this is music to the ears of Dirrell’s boxing fans because they’ve been waiting to see Dirrell fight consistently again for some time now. Three years ago, Dirrell really made his mark in dominating his opposition in the Super Six tournament, and looking superb.
It was thought then that Dirrell and Ward would battle it out and the winner of that fight would move onto to the finals of the Super Six, but Dirrell’s injury against Arthur Abraham ruined what would have been the best fight of the tournament.
According to Dan Rafael, Dirrell’s team wants to get him in for an IBF eliminator bout really quick. However, it may not be against Carl Froch because some feel that he’s going to vacate the title in order to avoid his #1 IBF challenger mandatory challenger Adonis Stevenson.
Whatever the case, Dirrell will soon be facing someone for the IBF strap in the near future. Whether that’s Froch or Stevenson, it doesn’t matter. Dirrell will be too much for either guy. Froch looks like he’s just going to fight Mikkel Kessler, Lucian Bute and then retire with a final fight against Andre Ward. He’s not likely to stick around to fight Dirrell a second time.
