Dirrell no longer trained by Mayweather Sr

dirrell34233By Scott Gilfoid: Super middleweight Andre Dirrell (20-1, 14 KO’s), who should be unbeaten still given his controversial loss to Carl Froch, is no longer training with Floyd Mayweather Sr. It seems they’ve decided to go in different directions for some unknown reason.

According to Hustleboss.com, Mayweather Sr. was late for some Dirrell’s workouts, but that still might not be the reason for the two going their separate way. Mayweather Sr. was reportedly not sure why Dirrell’s fights weren’t happening.

There were a couple of fight cards in particular that Dirrell was rumored to be fighting on, but it failed to happen.

Dirrell is still with his grandfather Leon Lawson Sr. in addition to Rodney Crisler.
Here’s my take all of this. Dirrell is a professional, and he’s one of those guys that wants to take on the best. He’s obviously been dealing problems getting the important fights that he wants, and he’s not going to take something if it’s not up to his standards or if he’s not ready.

Dirrell will be back in the ring tonight against Michael Gbenga (14-6, 14 KO’s) in an 8 round bout at the Convention Center, McAllen, Texas, USA. If Dirrell shines in this fight like many people think he will, he then wants to get back in the ring in March and look for another fight to sharpen him up to get ready for a possible IBF super middleweight eliminator bout this year.

Dirrell is targeting IBF champ Carl Froch to go after his title. That’s the smart move because Froch doesn’t much speed, and Dirrell already showed in their fight in 2009 that Froch couldn’t lay a glove on him when the two fighters were on the outside. The only way Froch was landing was when the two would come in a clinch.

Froch would then hit him while they were holding onto each other. Dirrell will make adjustments in a rematch, if Froch doesn’t get whipped by Mikkel Kessler, Lucian Bute or Andre Ward before then, and make sure he avoids getting near him. The best way Dirrell can do that is not to let Froch clinch because that’s when he’ll look to brain Dirrell.

You can look for an impressive performance from Dirrell tonight. He should be able to get Gbenga out of there fairly early if he sits down on his punches the way he did in his last performance against Darryl Cunningham in December 2011. Dirrell looks like he’s punching harder now, but with the same blazing hand speed.
