Dierry Jean stops Rivera

By Jim Dower: Unbeaten NABF light welterweight champion Dierry Jean (24-0, 16 KO’s) made easy work of Mexican journeyman Juan Jesus Rivera (25-10, 16 KO’s) in stopping him in the 2nd round on Saturday night at the Hilton Lac Learny, Gatineau, Quebec, Canada.

Jean, 30, knocked Rivera down twice in the fight, once in the 1st and a final time in the 2nd. Jean dropped Rivera with a hard right hand to the head late in the 2nd round. Rivera staggered to his feet, and the action was allowed to continue.

Jean, #1 WBC, #7 IBF, #14 WBA, then tagged Rivera with two hard left hands that caused the referee Michael Griffin to step in and halt the fight at 2:54 of the round.

Late in the 1st round, Jean dropped Rivera with what looked to be a jab. Rivera was rushing forward to try and land a shot, and he was hit a left hand from Jean that put him down. It was a flash knockdown.

Jean is ranked #1 by the WBC, and he should get a title shot against WBC champion Danny Garcia and/or Lucas Matthysse in the near future. Jean has good power, but he’s not nearly as complete a fighter as those two. Jean doesn’t throw enough punches, and he looks really raw.

It’s hard to imagine Jean being able to compete against the likes of Matthysse and Garcia, let alone try to beat them. He’s someone that will have problems against the best fighters in the division. At best, you could only give Jean a punchers chance to beat Matthysse and Garcia. Jean needs to be position to go after Lamont Peterson instead because he might have a slight chance of beating him. It wouldn’t be a good one, though, because Peterson is a much more skilled fighter than Jean, and he’d outwork him if this fight ever happened.
