Deontay Wilder comments on Thompson’s upset of Price

price56By Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated American heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder (27-0, 27 KO’s) was stunned at hearing the news about American Tony Thompson’s surprising 2nd round knockout win over Britain’s David Price (15-1, 13 KO’s) last Saturday night.

Thompson beat the UK’s best heavyweight, and beat him the best way you can by knocking him out. In a thinly veiled reference to unbeaten Tyson Fury, Wilder say there will be other heavyweights that will get exposed in 2013.

Wilder said on his twitter “I told them not to sleep on Tony omg [oh my God].. Never sleep on any fighter a lot of them will be #exposed this year. Never disrespect the national anthem. #SoDisrespectful. Lesson of the day age is just a number. And that was and out of shape Thompson WOW!!! That’s why I love this sport anything can happen no one is safe no matter who they have fought or what they’ve gone.”

Some fans decided to boo the U.S national anthem last Saturday night before the start of the Thompson-Price fight, and this reportedly upset Thompson a great deal. That’s obviously not why he won the fight, but it’s an incident that left a bad taste in Thompson’s mouth.

Had it been Wilder in the ring with Thompson instead of Price last Saturday night I doubt the fight would have lasted more than a round. Wilder has that one punch power, and the right hand shots that Price was able to land on Thompson in the 1st and 2nd rounds would have been knockout shots by Wilder. He legitimately has one-punch knockout strength, and I believe he hits much, much harder than Price. He’s also a lot faster and more athletic.

Price is so stiff and robotic. It’s not surprising that he was hit by the right hand that knocked him out by Thompson. He just couldn’t rotate his body around quick enough to avoid the shot. It was like a tank moving too slowly for the faster infantry.

Wilder would take a fight against Thompson in a second if it were offered to him. It’s obviously not going to unless Golden Boy Promotions throws some money at Thompson to make the fight happen. More likely we’ll see Tyson Fury look to get the fight with Thompson so that he can try and prove a point of how good he is compared to Price.
