Cotto waiting until the smoke clears to pick next opponent for Fall

cotto43By Dan Ambrose: Former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) says he’s going to wait until the upcoming set of fights take place before he selects who he plans on fighting when he returns to the ring in the Fall.

While the 32-year-old Cotto isn’t saying which fights he’s looking at to pick out his next opponent, it’s likely the possible Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero and Austin Trout vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez are the fights that Cotto will be looking to pick his next opponent.

Cotto said to primerahora.com “The details of the fight and where they will be working to announce them later. We are waiting to see what happens in the summer and what fighter emerges with the best.”

If Cotto, #7 WBA, was thinking fast, he’d contact Bob Arum to throw his name in the fat for Pacquiao’s next fight in September in case Juan Manuel Marquez decides he doesn’t want to take that fight. As of now, it’s looking like Marquez won’t be fighting Pacquiao in September.

If Cotto lets Arum know that he’s really interested in the fight then Arum will likely select him next for Pacquiao rather than going with a less popular option.

It’s not likely that Cotto will fight Austin Trout again if he beats Canelo. Cotto was pretty well handled by Trout last December, and I don’t believe Cotto in any kind of rush to fight Trout again after that fight.

Cotto would do well against Guerrero, but that’s not a fight that will happen because Guerrero will probably lose to Mayweather Jr. in May. The best options for Cotto in the fall are Mayweather, Canelo or Pacquiao.

Those three are obviously the ones Cotto will be looking at rather than facing Guerrero or Trout. Those two fighters don’t bring much to the table for Cotto, and he likely won’t bother facing them even if they come out on top in their next fights.

Cotto is trying to get the most out of what’s left of his 12-year pro career. He’s lost his last two fights to Mayweather and Trout, and he can’t afford to lose his next if he wants to remain a relevant fighter.
