By Dan Ambrose: Former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) has decided to fight only three more times before he permanently retires from boxing, according to espn deportes. The top of the list for Cotto’s last three fights are Austin Trout and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. The third opponent is still unknown.
Cotto said to espn “I can say I have three fights to retire from boxing and devote myself to my children.“
Cotto will be fighting in October or November, and then look to finish out his career with two fights in 2014.
Cotto, 30, has lost his last two fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Austin Trout. The loss to Mayweather wasn’t so bad because it was a competitive fight, but Cotto’s 12 round unanimous decision loss to Trout last December was more of a one-sided fight. That defeat suggested that Cotto doesn’t have too much time left at the top if he chooses to stay at 154 unless he’s okay with being a mere contender.
Cotto vs. Canelo is a fight that was supposed to be taking place in May, but Cotto messed things up by losing to Trout last December. If Cotto had faced a soft touch instead of Trout then he’d be facing Canelo next. Cotto is perfect for the young 22-year-old Canelo to beat up and dominate. If Cotto is serious about wanting to face Canelo then he should save him for last because if Cotto faces him next then he’ll likely suffer his third straight defeat.
I don’t know if Cotto will be able to finish out his last three fights if he takes a bad loss in his next fight. Cotto should focus on facing someone he has a pretty good chance of beating like a welterweight. If Cotto can lure one of the welterweights to face him then he may have a chance of winning his next fight, but he won’t win if he faces a junior middleweight like Canelo or Trout next.
