By Mark Havey: May 25th will be a date most fans will certainly have made a mental note of. Carl Froch will be stepping in the ring in a bid to avenge his first career defeat against Mikkel Kessler. Both men like battle, not with tactics, but with audacious courage and ferocity.
The fight is very likely to be shown on PPV which Britain won’t be happy about. But I’m sure no one will be complaining after the fight. Value for money is stamped all over this fight. Skill shouldn’t be something you should be expecting in this fight. Froch and Kessler don’t like to out think their opponents, they prefer to out fight them.
Mikkel is coming off a 3rd round KO of Brian Magee. Before that he stopped Allan Green in 4 rounds. The man can certainly punch. He will be fighting away which shows his confidence. I’m sure he will be motivated by the fact that he has already beaten Froch. Kessler has only ever lost to Joe Calzaghe and Andre Ward, two great fighters.
Froch had a great 2012. Yusaf Mack was stopped in round 3. Froch wasn’t tested and few expected him to be. Last year also saw him enter the ring as an underdog. Many boxing writers, including some on this site, predicted his demise. It didn’t play out the way that people thought or the way that some wanted. Froch was brilliant and viciously knocked out Lucian Bute in 5 brutal rounds.
This fight is a real ‘pick em’ fight. Both men have world class chins and punching power to be feared. The Carl Froch of 2013 is a different Carl Froch to the one Kessler faced in 2010. He has gained more confidence despite being out fought by Ward. I expect this to the best anyone has seen of Carl Froch. Aside from Andre Ward, Carl Froch is the best super middleweight in the world. And gaining revenge over Kessler will likely give him a chance at avenging his only other loss, to Ward.
