Canelo should fight Carlos Molina if he doesn’t want Trout

molina56By Dan Ambrose: If WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions are negative to the idea of him fighting unbeaten WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout next on May 4th, then Golden Boy needs to use their ace in the hole Carlos Molia (21-5-2, 6 KO’s) to step forward and be the one that faces the 22-year-old Canelo.

What makes the 29-year-old Molina such a good option for Canelo is that he’s got very little power, he doesn’t move a lot around the ring, and he’ll be right there in close trying to match Canelo body punch for body punch for 12 rounds.

It’s not as if the flat-footed Canelo would have to go looking for Molina like he would against the highly skilled Trout, and there wouldn’t be nearly as much of a potential for Canelo to get-boxed like he would if he fought Trout.

I think it’s a great fight if Golden Boy is reluctant to put Canelo in with someone that might make him look bad the way Trout likely would.

Molina has won two out of his last three fights and is coming off of a 12 round unanimous decision over Cory Spinks last Friday night in an IBF light middleweight eliminator. It’s the wrong eliminator for a Canelo bout, but I’m sure Molina would MUCH prefer to fight the more popular Canelo than the IBF champion Cornelius Bundrage any old day. It’s a much bigger fight, especially if Molina faces Canelo in the co-main event on the May 4th pay per view card on HBO.

Molina didn’t suffer any cuts and also didn’t take any punishment in defeating Spinks last Friday, so he should be ready to go by May 4th if Golden Boy wants to let him face their young star Canelo. I think Molina would be a much better option for Canelo than James Kirkland or Alfredo Angulo.
