Broner’s dad: Ricky Burns is afraid of Adrien; he’ll run from us if we try to fight him

By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner’s dad took over the last part of last night’s post fight press conference following Broner’s impressive 5th round TKO win over UK fighter Gavin Rees. Broner’s dad said he doesn’t see any point in Broner trying to get a unification bout against IBF lightweight champion Ricky Burns because he feels Burns will run from the fight and choose to either vacate or go off in another direction.

Here’s some of what Broner’s dad had to say:

“All y’all worried about Ricky Burns. He’s nobody. Give us somebody that wants to fight. He’s scared. We tried to fight him at 130, [but] he ran from us, just gave us the belt. We tried him at 135. He ran from us again. He didn’t even want to see us. He asked for money, he’s nobody, he’s a bum. All y’all know if he had a fight, he’s going to lose on purpose because he don’t want to see is, and move up to the next weight class and probably win a world championship up there. But when we move up, he’s going to do the same thing.”

I don’t see why Broner is wasting his time on trying to get a fight with Burns if he’s having the kinds of problems his dad is talking about. Broner tried to get a fight with Burns when Burns was the WBO super featherweight champion, but Burns vacated his title when Broner became his mandatory. Recently, Broner tried to get a fight with Burns, but Burns chose not to take the fight because he needed more time. That should be enough for Broner to give up on the idea of fighting Burns, but he still wants to face him because there really isn’t anyone else at 135 to fight.

Broner says he wants to stay at lightweight for a little while longer because he’s making the weight so easily. Since he’s going to stay at this weight, he obviously wants to beat guys like Burns, but he should get a clue and forget about the idea so he doesn’t waste time. If Broner is firm about wanting to stay at lightweight, then he’s going to have to fight a lot of less than big name fighters at this weight.

That means instead of fighting guys like Lucas Matthysse and Danny Garcia, Broner will have to try and the likes of Burns, Sharif Bogere, Miguel Vazquez and Richard Abril. Those aren’t exactly household names in the United States. Broner says he wants to become a pay per view star by his next fight, but that’s not going to happen fighting the like of Burns, Vazquez, Bogere and Abril. It’s still too premature.
