Broner willing to fight Burns in the UK if the money is good

broner4By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) says he’s open to fighting WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) in the UK if he gets the right kind of cash for the fight to be worthwhile for him, the star, having to travel for.

Broner said to Sky Sports when asked if he’d be willing to travel to the UK to fight Burns “As long as my check is right. It don’t matter where we fight. It’s going to be the same results. He’s not going to beat me.”

This news might interest Burns’ promoter because if they can get Broner over to the UK to fight Burns in Scotland or perhaps London, then this is a fight that you could probably put in an outdoor stadium or at the very least in a huge 17,000 seat indoor arena.

Broner has never fought in front of a crowd like that before during his 5-year pro career, and I don’t see him ever fighting in front of a crowd that big if he chooses to fight in the United States every time.

The only way Broner will fight in front of a crowd like that in the U.S is if he one day fights in Texas in one of their big stadiums. I don’t see Broner having any qualms about fighting Burns in the UK in front of a hostile crowd. If that’s the country where the fight makes the most money, then I can see Broner readily saying yes to it.

I just don’t know how big of a fight a Broner vs. Burns fight would be in the UK because Broner isn’t really well known to the Brits. They’re going obviously going to find out about him tonight when he whips Welsh fighter Gavin Rees, but for a lot of them this is going to be their first time seeing Broner fight.

I also have doubts whether Burns is a big ticket seller outside of Scotland. It would be disappointing if Burns’ management booked a huge 30,000 seat outside football stadium, and then only a 3,000 paying customers showed up to watch the fight. What a disaster that would be.

For a Broner vs. Burns fight to happen, Broner will have to take care of business tonight against Gavin Rees, which should be easy work, and Burns will have to defeat IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez in their unification bout next month on March 16th in London. That’s going to be a lot tougher for Burns to win because Vazquez has the talent to beat him, or at the very least make him look so bad that the win is tainted somehow. If Burns wins a controversial decision or if he looks just plain horrible in beating Vazquez then there won’t be any need for Broner to waste his time fighting Burns. Broner can then move up to 140 and look to face the MUCH bigger names at that weight.
