Broner possible for May 4th at MGM Grand, in Las Vegas

broner222By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) could get a quick turn around and be on the May 4th fight card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Boxrec.com has Broner scheduled for the May 4th card, which is supposed to be headlined by Floyd Mayweather Jr. against a still to be determined opponent.

Having Broner on the undercard will make the card a huge one with Mayweather, Canelo and Broner packing a 1-2-3 money punch on pay per view.

Broner demolished Gavin Rees last night by a 5th round TKO at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. After the fight, Broner said “I want to get out of the cycle of fighting two fights per year. I’d like to fight 10 fights per year if I could.”

Broner getting a quick turnaround on May 4th could be his way of showing that he’s willing to fight as often as possible to get more visibility with the boxing public. Why not? Broner is destroying his opponents so effortlessly without getting that much, so he should try and fight as often as he can in order to become a bigger star.

Broner wants to become the first billion dollar fighter in boxing, and the only way he’s going to be able to do that is by fighting as often as he can against the best fighters he can. The pickings are kind of slim at 135 at the moment for Broner, so he’s not going to be able to concentrate on quality as long as he persists in fighting in this ghost town of a division, but Broner can fight as often as he’d like before he becomes a pay per view fighter.

Once that happens, then it’s going to slow him down to three fights at a year tops because it takes months to market the PPV fights, and it’s also a very slow process to negotiate fights with opponents.

As far as what would be available to Broner for the May 4th fight card, there probably won’t be much for him to fight. Ricky Burns, the WBO lightweight champion, is fighting on March 16th, and he obviously won’t agree to jump back in the ring within two months to fight a dangerous fighter like Broner. The same goes for IBF champion Miguel Vazquez. It’s possible Broner could face the winner of the Sharif Bogere vs. Richard Abril fight.

Those two are fighting for the vacant WBA lightweight title this month. If Broner can fight the winner of the Abril-Bogere fight, then that would be a unification bout and it would make it a lot more interesting. I can see the winner of the Abril vs. Bogere fight being open to fighting Broner on May 4th, as long as they don’t suffer any cuts in their fight this month.
