Broner: I’m praying Burns beats Vazquez

broner54By Scott Gilfoid: Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) wants nothing but the best for WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns for his fight next month against IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez on March 16th at the Wembley Arena in London, England. Broner says he’s really hoping Burns wins that fight so that he can face him in the near future later on this year.

Broner said at the Broner – Gavin Rees post-fight press conference “That’s [a fight against Burns] easy money. We going to wait, we going to see if Ricky Burns wins. I’m pulling for Ricky Burns. I hope he wins. I’m praying that he wins. We’ll see what happens in the fight, and we’ll go from there.”

Broner doesn’t know if Burns has the talent to beat the slick Miguel Vazquez. He knows himself that he’d beat Vazquez, but he’s unsure about Burns because he sees flaws in his game that will make the Vazquez fight a potentially tough one for him.

If Burns does beat Vazquez, he’ll have the WBO and IBF titles in his possession, and that could make it incredibly tough for Broner to try and make a deal with Burns. He’ll likely want big money in order to take the fight, and he might end up pricing himself out. With two titles, Burns could in theory ask for a 50-50 split of the purse or maybe even more. That obviously would be a deal killer because Broner is the attraction in this fight.

Broner says he’s okay with fighting Burns in the UK if the money is good enough. Burns’ promoter will have to find a big stadium to make that fight a big enough one to temp Broner to come over from the U.S. Broner is okay with it because he knows the fight wouldn’t go to the scorecards, so there’s no chance of him ending up on the losing end of a controversial decision.

I don’t like Burns’ chances against the Vazquez. That guy is incredibly tough to fight because he’s impossible to hit, and he’s able to land his shots at a high rate because he doesn’t load up on them. Vazquez has long arms and he likes to slap his opponents. It’s incredibly frustrating to fight the guy, and he’s only lost to Tim Bradley and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in the past. I don’t see Burns as being anywhere near the same class as those two fighters.
