By Scott Gilfoid: Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) is starting to realize the responsibility that is resting on his shoulders now that he’s on the verge of taking over Boxing given that Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao are both on their last legs in terms of fighting at a high level.
Broner understands that it’s going to be him that carries the torch when those two stars creep into retirement in the near future, and he’ll be the only pay per view star the sport has to offer.
Broner said “There are high expectations for me to take over boxing after Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao hang up the gloves.”
It’s so true. There are massive expectations for the young 23-year-old Broner to be the one that carries the sport for the next 10 to 15 years. This is why it’s important that Broner not waste his energy fighting inferior competition that doesn’t further the sport.
Last night’s fight between Broner and Gavin Rees was a perfect example of that. It was such a waste of Broner’s superior talent for him to have to fight a guy like Rees because it wasn’t appealing fight due to the one-sided nature of it. Rees was just there in body, and it was too easy for Broner to destroy him in a 5th round KO.
Mayweather and Pacquiao may stubbornly hang around the sport for another five years or so, but I think they’ll be taking losses left and right within a couple of years, and by the time they do retire they’ll be just a shell of their former selves.
Knowing boxing fans, they’ll still be willing to pay to see Mayweather and Pacquiao fight different guys, but they won’t be winning like they did in the past if they stick around like I think they will.
Broner will be the real star, and he’ll have to take over while Mayweather and Pacquiao are still fighting. With the money they’re making, they’re not likely to retire as long boxing fans are willing to purchase their fights in high numbers on PPV.
