Broner: I’ll fight on Mayweather-Guerrero undercard if the money is good

broner777By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) says he’s willing to fight on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather Jr’s fight against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero on May 4th on Showtime pay-per-view if the money is good enough to make it worth his while. Broner, 23, fights for HBO, so that could be a potential obstacle unless his adviser Al Haymon can smooth things over with HBO to pave his way for the PPV card.

Broner said to RingTV when asked if he’d be willing to fight on the Mayweather vs. Guerrero undercard: “If the check is right…of course, man. But I’m Mr. HBO, Man. I’m loyal. But I mean, let me tell you something. I’m a bossiness man.”

I’m sure Mayweather would love the idea of the Mayweather-clone Broner fighting on his undercard because he likes Broner a lot, but also it would be a big addition to the card to have the popular Broner on the card in terms of extra PPV buys. The co-main event already has the highly popular Mexican star WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fighting, possibly against WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout.

Just having that fight on the card could mean that the Mayweather fight card could generate 1.5 million buys or more. But if you add Broner to the card as the third fight of the undercard, then that could push the buys up to around the 1.8 million PPV buys level.

Broner’s fight last Saturday night against Gavin Rees generated 1.4 million viewers to the HBO generated fight at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Those numbers surpassed the Amir Khan vs. Danny Garcia and the Tim Bradley vs. Manny Pacquiao fight on the re-broadcast, according to RingTV.

That tells you that Broner is a big enough star to make a real impact to the Mayweather card if they’re able to get him on the card. He wants to fight on the card, but there’s the question whether there will be enough money left over to pay him, as well as if HBO will allow Broner to fight on Showtime. With Mayweather and Alvarez on the card, both of which will be making a great deal of money, there might be enough left over for Broner to receiver a nice payday.
