Broner: I wanted to fight Ricky Burns but he ran again

broner23(Rich Kane – Hoganphotos/Golden Boy Promotions) By Scott Gilfoid: In today’s press conference with challenger Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s), WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) took opportunity to vent his frustrations at WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns for him choosing not to fight him recently when Broner’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions tried to put the fight together between them.

Burns chose not to take the fight, and Broner was then forced to settle for Rees. That was a big letdown for Broner because he’s been trying to get a fight against Rees since 2011, and he’s had zero luck in the two times he tried to make the fight.

Broner said “I wanted to fight Ricky Burns, but he put on his track shoes and ran again. [He] went for another lap. He ran away from me again. I’m just ready to fight whoever. I just want everybody to put on their glasses because I’m going I’m shining [on Saturday night]. I’m going to shine, so be ready.”

At this point it might be better off for Broner to ignore Burns and look for bigger things at lightweight and then light welterweight. A fight against IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez is the bigger fight in the U.S then facing Burns. Besides that, Burns will likely lose to Vazquez next month when they go at it on March 16th in London, so there’s no real point in Broner talking about Burns.

If Burns does beat Vazquez, it’s possible it won’t be a convincing enough win to where he’s seen as the real winner. I can see that fight ending up as a real muddy fight with Vazquez doing the better work, making Burns look bad, but then still losing the fight. If that happens then Broner needs to forget about Burns and fight Vazquez because he doesn’t need to validate a poor decision by facing the controversial winner.

If Burns does win convincing then, of course Broner should fight him. However, if Broner continues to have problems trying to get Burns in the ring, then he needs to move on with his career already and move up to 140.

There’s only two fights for Broner at 135 right now – Burns and Vazquez. It’s pointless for Broner to stick around to fight the winner of the Richard Abril vs. Sharif Bogere bout because there’s no interest from the boxing public in seeing Broner fight either of them.
