Broner: I should be #2 pound-for-pound behind Mayweather at #1

broner534By Scott Gilfoid: The talented WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner takes issue with the pound for pound rankings by Ring Magazine, which has him currently listed at number #6. Broner sees himself as firmly at number #2 behind his good friend Floyd Mayweather Jr. at the #1 sport.

Broner said on Friday night “They say I’m #5, but I should be #2 behind my big brother Floyd Mayweather Jr.”

I totally agree with Mr. Broner. He’s #2 on my list, and that’s without him even saying anything. Broner is an incredible talent.

Here is the current Ring pound for pound listing:

1. Floyd Mayweather Jr.
2. Andre Ward
3. Juan Manuel Marquez
4. Sergio Martinez
5. Nonito Donaire
6. Adrien Broner

While I don’t think Broner has accomplished as much as Ward, Marquez, Donaire and Martinez, but I think he’s a more entertaining fighter than all of them, so I’m okay with him being at the #2 spot.

Let’s be real about this; boxing is entertainment, and if you were to compare Broner to those aforementioned fighters in terms of the entertainment value that Broner provides for his fans then you have to put Broner right behind Mayweather at #2 because he’s clearly more entertaining than Ward, Marquez, Martinez and Donaire in my view.

I don’t particularly see those guys as really fun fighters to watch. I think Manny Pacquiao is exciting to watch, but he’s not ranked in the top five because he lost his last two fights.

Mayweather definitely deserves the number #1 spot, and there are few boxing fans that will disagree with that based on his unbeaten record and immense talent. But Broner is like a clone of Mayweather, and I expect him to do bigger things with his career in terms of making money and exciting fights.

In other news, Broner is still a possibility for the undercard of Mayweather’s fight against Robert Guerrero on May 4th. Broner being on the card will hinge on whether there’s enough money left over to pay him and a decent opponent.

Unfortunately, there might not be enough money left over to pay Broner due to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez being on undercard as the co-main event. Alvarez is going to want a big payday to fight on the card.
