Braehmer_Gutknecht_1By Allan Fox: Former WBO light heavyweight champion Jurgen Braehmer (38-2, 30 KO’s) will be challenging EBU light heavyweight champion Eduard Gutknecht (24-1, 9 KO’s) at the Max Scheling Halle, Prenzlauer Berg, in Berlin, Germany.

Braehmer, 34, is looking to pick up Gutknecht’s European Boxing Union title and then use the victory to get in better position to fight for a world title. Ranked #2 WBO, #11 IBF, Braehmer could land a title shot against WBO champ Nathan Cleverly or IBF champion Tavoris Cloud in the near future if he can keep winning.

Beating the 30-year-old Gutknecht won’t be easy for Braehmer given that he’s not lost a fight I the last three years since he was beaten by super middleweight Robert Stieglitz by a 12 round unanimous decision in April 2010.

That fight was a lot closer than the judges’ scores. They gave Stieglitz the decision by the scores of 119-109, 117-110, and 117-111. I had the fight almost even, but it wasn’t surprising that Stieglitz was given the decision because he’s pretty popular in Germany.

Gutknecht, #2 WBC, #4 WBA, #5 WBO, has looked really good since the Stieglitz fight, beating Danny McIntosh, Vyacheslav Uzelkov and Tony Averlant in impressive performances. Gutknecht looked especially impressive with his win over McIntosh and Uzelkov. He really fought well in both of those fights, and was able to dominate with his jabs.

Gutknecht isn’t a big power puncher, but he’s got respectable power at times. What he does do well is jab. He can wear down his opponents with his jab alone, and he makes it really tough for his opposition because he doesn’t give that many opportunities to land their power shots.

Braehmer would have to be considered the favorite in this fight. He’s got the experience and power advantage, and he’s a really smart fighter as well. Braehmer will go after Gutknecht and look to break him down slowly round after round with body shots and hooks to the head.
