Bey Jr: I’d like to fight Ricky Burns next, but he’ll lose to Vazquez

bey5By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten super featherweight Mickey Bey Jr. (19-0-1, 10 KO’s) says he’s interested in facing WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s), but he has his doubts about Burns beating IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez in their fight on March 16th.

Bey Jr. said “I like that Ricky Burns fight, right off the bat. I actually told Floyd [Mayweather Sr] that. I’d like to get Ricky Burns, but actually I don’t think he’ll beat Vazquez. But Ricky Burns, I’d fight him right away.”

I agree with Bey Jr. Burns is going to lose to Vazquez. The only way I see Burns winning that fight is by a hometown decision that boxing fans outside of the UK disagree with. Vazquez has such boxing skills and such good defensive, it’s going to be tough for Burns to do anything in that fight other than take shots. But it’s going to be tough for Vazquez to earn a decision fighting Burns in the UK.

Bey Jr. definitely is ready for the Burns fight. It doesn’t matter that Bey Jr. has fought only once in the past year, I still think he’s more than good enough to beat Burns if he can get the fight.

Bey Jr. destroyed Robert Rodriguez (7-3, 3 KO’s) by a 3rd round knockout last Saturday night at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, Nevada. Bey flattened Rodriguez with two scoring left hooks that were two of the best left hooks I’ve seen from a super featherweight before. Those punches were huge, and I don’t know of anyone at super featherweight or lightweight that could have taken those shots.

The point is not to get hit with them in the first place, and I know of only one fighter at lightweight that could keep from getting hit with those shots and that’s the talented WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner. His defense is so good that he’d never get hit with Bey’s lefts, and I could see Broner taking him to school despite Bey’s superior hand speed and left hook.
