Arum will likely need to make a huge offer to get Marquez for Pacquiao

marquez763By Chris Williams: Bob Arum will be meeting with Juan Manuel Marquez to see if he can convince him to face Manny Pacquiao in September in a huge pay per view fight. Neither fighter will be taking tune-up fights before then. Arum badly wants this fight, as does Pacquiao.

Arum, Pacquiao and Marquez all want the fight to take place outside of the U.S for tax reasons, but that might not happen because they likely won’t be able to sell expensive tickets if they put the fight in Asia.

The only way to make up for this is to put the fight in a huge stadium and hope for the best to make up for what you won’t be getting in terms of prices per ticket by selling lots of tickets.

You can understand Pacquiao’s interest because he was knocked cold by Marquez last time they met, and that’s something he obviously wants to avenge as soon as possible. However, Pacquiao may not get his chance unless Arum gives Marquez a big offer to interest him because as of now he no longer wants to fight Pacquiao after having accomplished his goal of knocking Pacquiao out last time they fought.

Arum will be making an offer to Marquez, but it’s going to have to be a really good one because Marquez is already financially set for life after his last two fights with Pacquiao.

Marquez will no doubt be asking for parity in the negotiations. He’s in the position now to tell Arum he wants a 50-50 deal, and if Arum says no then it really doesn’t matter to Marquez because he’s already financially set. He’s not blowing through money like it’s going out of style some boxers.

Marquez doesn’t need to keep fighting. If he does decide to fight on, then Pacquiao is the only game in town for him, but he still is in a good position to get a much better deal than the 76-24 split he received last time he fought Pacquiao.
