Adrien Broner talks Gamboa and Rios

broner10By Scott Gilfoid: Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) says he’s open to fighting Brandon Rios and Yuriorkis Gamboa in the future, but he has conditions for a fight with Gamboa. Broner wants to make sure Gamboa to be tested for performance enhancing drugs to where he’s clean before he’ll agree to fight him. As for Rios, Broner is leaving that fight up to his promoters to make.

Broner said at the post-fight press conference last night “Yuriorkis Gamboa is fighting PEDs [performance enhancing drugs]. I don’t want to hear about Yuriorkis Gamboa. Tell him to go get his piss clean, and then he can come talk to Adrien Broner. Other than that, he’s done. If Brandon Rios wants to fight me, we can fight. I don’t make my fights. I fight whoever they put in front of me.”

It doesn’t sound like Broner is all that interested in facing Gamboa at the moment, but that could change in the future if Gamboa is able to get back in the ring and pick up some impressive wins. It sounds as if Gamboa will have to be open to testing for PEDs if he wants to face Broner in the future because I don’t think Broner will fight him unless he does agree to the testing.

That would be a good fight, though, because Gamboa has better hand speed than Broner, and he’s good defensively. The only question is how will Gamboa react to getting hit by a fighter as big and as strong as Broner.

Gamboa has been fighting at featherweight, and he only recently moved up to super featherweight. Gamboa has been dropped by featherweights, so what’s going to happen when he faces a fighter with the size and power of Broner? I think it could be bad for Gamboa. Broner is more like a welterweight than a lightweight, and it would be a big step up for Gamboa in terms of the kind of power he’d be getting hit with.

Rios vs. Broner fight is undoable at present because Rios fights for Top Rank, and Broner’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions likely won’t be open to the idea of negotiating a fight with Top Rank.

I think Broner wins the fight if it could happen. Would Bob Arum of Top Rank agree to put Rios in a risky fight with Broner? Probably not. Arum seems to be saving Rios for a fight against Manny Pacquiao, and Broner would mess things up for Arum and Rios by knocking Rios out or at the minimum making him look bad the same way Richard Abril did.
