50 Cent: Mayweather-Pacquiao fight is $100 million down the drain

floyd66By Chris Williams: 50 Cent, the good friend of Floyd Mayweather Jr, is really disappointing that a fight between him and his arch rival Manny Pacquiao couldn’t get made because he saw that fight as an opportunity for Mayweather to make a bundle. 50 Cent isn’t sure who would win the fight, as he sees it one of those fights that could go either way.

50 Cent said to Renada Roman of Hip Hop Nation about the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight “That’s over a $100 million down the drain.”

50 Cent said this in response to Renada saying the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight likely wouldn’t be doable now that Pacquiao was just beaten by Juan Manuel Marquez.

I don’t think it’s a fight that is necessarily down the drain like 50 Cent says, but it will be hard to negotiate now because Mayweather probably won’t give Pacquiao a 50-50 purse split or anything close to 50-50, and Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum would likely insist that the fight be negotiated close to an even split.

How do you agree to give Pacquiao and even split if you’re Mayweather? Pacquiao has lost his last two fights, and you can really say he’s lost his last three fights because his win over Marquez in November 2011 was a loss in the minds of many boxing fans that saw that one. That’s three losses, and you give Pacquiao and even deal with him no longer fighting at a high enough level to deserve the split.

I do believe the fight could be made if Arum and Pacquiao would agree to a 70-30 deal with Mayweather. That would likely get the fight made and it would still make a ton of money. However, it won’t make nearly as much money if Pacquiao get knocked cold by Juan Manuel Marquez next September. Arum should forget all about making the fight for the time being and focus on putting Pacquiao in with the bigger fight against Mayweather.

If Arum was really thinking about what could have to Pacquiao against Marquez, then he wouldn’t take that chance and instead would go with the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight this year. But Arum isn’t going to do that, and that’s pretty clear. He’s going to put Pacquiao in with Marquez, and if he gets knocked out again, that’ll pretty much be the end of Pacquiao’s career.
