50 Cent doubts Mayweather will complete his six-fight contract with Showtime/CBS

mayweather3222By Allan Fox: Floyd Mayweather Jr. stands to make between $200-250 million for his six-fight contract with Showtime/CBS IF he completes it within the 30 months allotted in his contract. One person who doubts that Mayweather will get through the six fights is his friend 50 Cent. He doubts Mayweather will complete the contract for some reason.

50 Cent said to RingTV “If they can keep exciting enough opponents in front of him to continue sustaining a million views, it’ll make sense. If he starts to fight guys that don’t…if he actually fulfills, I doubt it.”

50 Cent doesn’t say why he doubts that Mayweather will complete the six-fight contract but it likely has to do with Mayweather’s habit of fighting only per year. He gets a good payday and then disappears to spend the money. He comes back when he needs more.

For Mayweather to complete this contract, he’s going to have to fight twice a year, and he won’t be able to disappear to go on big spending sprees with the loot. He’ll have to get back in training for his next opponent.

There’s also a possibility that Mayweather could lose to some of the six opponents, and his pay-per-views might not stay at the top 1 million buy level that he’s enjoyed for a number of years.

Mayweather’s next fight against the Mexican American Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero on May 4th will likely sell over 1 million buys because Mayweather will be able to attract a lot of Mexican boxing fans to purchase the fight. However, it’s not a really good match-up because Guerrero isn’t a popular fighter, so there’s a possibility that the fight might not draw 1 million buys.

The leaked list of Mayweather’s six approved opponents for his six-fight deal includes Marcos Maidana, Alfredo Angulo, Saul Alvarez, Devon Alexander and Danny Garcia. Only Alvarez is popular among those fighters, and if Mayweather does chooses to fight those guys, we could see Mayweather’s PPV totals dipping well below 1 million each time he fights, with the exception of his fight with Alvarez.

With a potential $250 million on the table for Mayweather if he completes the six-fight deal, I think it’s reasonable to conclude that he will complete the contract by fighting six times.

Mayweather knows he doesn’t have much time left in the sport, so he’s not going to walk away from that kind of money. Whether he wins those fights or brings in big PPV numbers, that’s something that you have to have doubts about, but not him failing to complete the six-fight contract.
