10,000 tickets sold for Froch-Kessler 2 in first 60 minutes on sale

froch08By Scott Gilfoid: Kalle Sauerland, the promoter for WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler, reports that 10,000 tickets were sold for Kessler’s May 25th fight against IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch at the O2 Arena in London, England. The high demand for tickets suggests that we could see the fight selling out in the next day or two, but besides that we could see the fight’s pay per view prices being jacked up. Judging from the responses from British boxing fans, they don’t seem to mind paying 15 pounds for the Kessler-Froch 2 fight.

However, I wonder if they’ll still feel the same way if the prices jump to 30 pounds for the fight. You see if there’s a high demand for the fight that will enable the promoters to increase the price of the fight if they so desire. That’s the way it is in the market place. Instead of the sellers decreasing the price for things in demand, they sometimes want to make a killing by jacking the prices up as high as possible if they feel that the buyers will be willing to pay the price to see the fight.

“10,000 tickets in 60 minutes – unreal,” Kalle said on his twitter.

O2 seats 20,000 visitors, so if the tickets keep purchase in high numbers by the Brits and the Danes at this rate, it’s probably going to be a sellout pretty quick. That’s all well good but I’m just wondering about the PPV prices. Will Eddie Hearn, Froch’s promoter, and Kalle be good about the prices for the PPV fight or will they jack them up sky-high, figuring the Brits will gladly pay any price just to see how Froch does against Kessler in the rematch.

I could understand paying top dollar to see a Froch fight if he were facing Andre Dirrell or Andre Ward, but I can’t see paying even a 1 pound to see a guy that was dominated by Ward in the Super Six tournament. It’s just not worth it because Kessler never redeemed himself after getting spanked by Ward. Heck, Kessler has only had four fights since Ward spanked him badly in 2009, and this is the bunch that Kessler has fought: Froch, Mehdi Bouadla, Allan Green and Brian Magee.

Those guys aren’t good enough for me to see Kessler as having proven himself since the Ward fight, and for this reason I can’t see paying anything to see the Kesskler-Froch fight. If Hearn or Sauerland want to make it a complimentary viewing of the fight then I would watch it, but it’s not worth paying for in my view.
