trout76By Dan Ambrose: WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout was reportedly arrested in the early morning hours on New Year’s Day in El Paso, Texas on suspicion of public intoxication at Taco Cabana. According to the El Paso Times, a fight broke out in the table next to Trout’s and the police responded and arrested him after smelling alcohol on his breath while they were investigating.

Trout was briefly held but then released after paying $105 for a book fee. There wasn’t a breathalyzer taken despite Trout reportedly asking for one to be conducted on him. Trout told the El Paso times “It was all just a mistake.”

Golovkin vs. Rosado to be fought at 160 lbs without catchweight

Light middleweight contender Gabriel Rosado has decided against challenging WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin at a catchweight of 158 lbs that his adviser Russell Peltz had set up for him for the fight to make it a little easier for him to challenge the 160 lb Golovkin. Rosado wants no part of the catchweight because he doesn’t want to hear any potential excuses from Golovkin when or if he beats him in their fight on January 19th at Madison Square Garden, in New York.

Rosado sees himself as a throwback fighter and he notes that fighters in the past didn’t need any kind of catchweight handicaps for their fights. They either made the fight or they didn’t, but they didn’t have weight stipulations to make things easier for them.

You can make a good argument that Rosado is a natural middleweight who has been fighting in the wrong division all these years because he’s huge for a light middleweight. Indeed, Rosado is even bigger than Golovkin, so a catchweight would seem to be something that might hurt Rosado himself more than it would Golovkin.

The Golovkin-Rosado fight will be televised on HBO Boxing After Dark, and it’s going to be Golovkin’s second fight for the boxing network. Golovin wants to put in a good display so he can impress American fans as well as please HBO.
