Should Pacquiao retire if he gets knocked cold again by Marquez?

pac912By Chris Williams: We already know that Manny Pacquiao is dead set against retiring following his brutal 6th round knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez last month. We know that Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum is eager to put Pacquiao back in with Marquez and he feels that a tune-up is pointless for the Filipino.

Pacquiao’s wife Jinkee and his mother both want him to retire from boxing, as well as Filipino Dr. Rustico Jimenez. The question is will Pacquiao continue to fight if Marquez knocks him out cold just like he did last month on December 8th or will Pacquiao stubbornly refuse to hang up his gloves and instead blame on the loss on being overconfident?

If you think the cry for Pacquiao to retire is bad now just imagine what it’s going to be like in September when and if the Mexican warrior plants him on the canvas again face down. There will likely be thousands of fans begging the Filipino to retire, and I bet there will be doctors emerging left and right with advice for him to retire.

Is Pacquiao’s pride so strong that he’ll resist the notions that he should retire and just keep plugging along despite signs that he may be taking a risk by sticking around and suffering additional knockouts? I guess it depends on Pacquiao’s perception of his next loss. If he blames it on overconfidence or some mistake he made in the fight, then I can see him choosing to stick around and continue to fight.

I think at the end of the day Pacquiao will continue fighting even if Marquez knocks him out just as badly as he did last time. It might take a number of really, really bad knockouts for Pacquiao to figure out that maybe it’s time that he retire for good. You hate to see it come to that because it’s always better for a fighter to get a clue well before they start getting poleaxed but for some fighters this is what it takes for them to finally hang them up.
