Schaefer doesn’t see Canelo vs. Trout taking place

trout45By Dan Ambrose: Despite WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout’s comments that a fight between him and WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is close to being made for May 4th. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, the promoter for Alvarez, says he doubts that fight will take place. He does say that Trout is one of the options that he’s considering for Alvarez’s next fight date, but it’s still not likely.

Sports Illustrated writer Chris Mannix said on his twitter “Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer tells SI that NoDoubtsTrout is ‘being considered’ for Canelo but ‘at this point, don’t think it will happen.’”

Trout replied to the twitter, saying “There you go y’all kill all that excitement.”

That’s pretty disappointing but also it’s kind of expected. Saul Alvarez said he wanted to fight Trout, but it looks like Alvarez was all talk and no action.

Did anyone really believe that Schaefer would allow his “Golden Goose,” as Trout calls Alvarez, to fight him? I didn’t because Trout doesn’t fit the mold of the kinds of opponents that Golden Boy has been putting in with Alvarez. He’s too damn good and too damn big. They’ve been feeding little welterweights and light welterweights to Alvarez in what appears to be an effort to pump him up in front of the boxing public. Why else would Golden Boy have been matching Alvarez against light welterweights and welterweights instead of guys from his own division?

The options for Alvarez’s next bout will come down to the names that Schaefer floated at the Trout vs. Miguel Cotto post fight press conference. Schaefer mentioned James Kirkland and Miguel Cotto as two fighters that he’s considering for the fight. If neither of those guys want the fight nor get selected, it’ll come down to either Alfredo Angulo or Marcos Maidana.

Given that Golden Boy has been matching Alvarez against 140 and 147 pounders, I think Maidana will get the pick because he’s basically a light welterweight who recently moved up in weight to welterweight and he clearly doesn’t have the size to be anything more than a contender/gate keeper at this weight. He was much better at 140. Maidana is a Golden Boy fighter, so that puts him in a good position to get selected. He’s no threat to beating Alvarez, unlike Trout.
