Sanchez: Rosado doesn’t pose any threat to Golovkin; we want to impress HBO

golovkin4By Dan Ambrose: Abel Sanchez, the trainer for WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s), doesn’t see light middleweight Gabriel Rosado (21-5, 13 KO’s) being any problem for Golovkin whatsoever for their fight on January 19th at the Madison Square Garden in New York.

Sanchez sees this fight as vehicle for Golovkin to impress HBO and boxing fans in the U.S, who are interested in seeing knockout wins. Sanchez doesn’t think Rosado will make it to the 12th round against the hard hitting Golovkin.

Sanchez said to RingTV “The Rosado fight will do for Gennady is to make the public and to make HBO and make the networks more aware of his ability to knock people out…I don’t think that Rosado is going to post that much of a threat.”

I’m in agreement with Sanchez. Rosado isn’t much of a threat whether he wants to believe that or not. He’s not a huge puncher and he’s not a legit middleweight. Rosado is moving up to middleweight for this fight against Golovkin, but he really belongs at 154.

Even at 154, Rosado struggled in fights against Alfredo Angulo, Fernando Guerrero and Derek Ennis, losing to all of them. I rate Golovin well above those fighters and it’s going to be tough on Rosado to be not only stepping up in weight but stepping up against one of the hardest punchers in the division in Golovkin.

Sanchez said he was hoping to get WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin to fight Golovin in a unification bout, but Quillin had no interest in taking the fight. Sanchez doesn’t mind because he feels that all the big name fighters will come around and eventually agree to fight Golovkin after he’s become better known in the United States to the casual boxing fans.

Rosado thinks he’s going to KO Golovkin in this fight, and he sees his experience as being an important factor in him being able to pull off an upset. Rosado figures he should be the one favored in the fight, not Golovkin. We’ll find out if Rosado is as good as he says he is on January 19th.
