By Jason Kim: Abel Sanchez, the trainer for WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s), sees him having a short night on January 19th if the stubborn brawler Gabriel Rosado (21-5, 13 KO’s) elects to slug with him when they meet in an HBO televised fight at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
Sanchez hasn’t seen a puncher like Golovkin before and he thinks he can quickly become a huge star in the sport if he can get the other top fighters to agree to fight him. Golovkin is willing to do anything to make the big fights happen. He wants Sergio Martinez, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Mikkel Kessler, Andre Ward, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Manny Pacquiao and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Sanchez said to the latimes.com “If a guy wants to stand in front of him and fight, no one hits like that. It’ll be a short fight, and it’ll be entertaining…I’ve always trained my guy to hurt somebody.”
Sanchez believes that Golovkin may have problems getting the big fights if he looks too good in beating Rosado because the other fighters might be afraid of him then. Golovkin is already having problems finding important fights because he’s struck recently in trying to get the other big names to fight him.
Rosado would be smart if he were to try and box Golovkin instead of slugging it out because he won’t last long if he goes right at him. However, Rosado only knows how to fight in one way by slugging with his opposition, so it’s not likely that he’ll be able to change his basic fighting style from what it currently is.
Sanchez wants to keep Golovkin busy in 2013, fighting him five times if possible. His next fight will be in March in Europe and then in June, barring any injuries.
