Robert Guerrero isn’t a sure thing win for Mayweather

guerrero452By Allan Fox: There’s talk of Floyd Mayweather Jr. possibly fighting WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on September 14th if Mayweather can get past Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) on May 4th, but I think the last thing that Golden Boy Promotions and Mayweather should be doing at this point is looking past Guerrero.

I think that’s a mistake that could prove costly for Mayweather and Golden Boy. We’ve already seen the Canelo jinx in action on two occasions when he was supposed to fight Paul Williams and then later Victor Ortiz. I think it’s highly possible we could see a third jinx with the soon to be 36-year-old Mayweather beaten by Guerrero.

Mayweather was lucky to win his last fight against former WBA World junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto last year in May because Mayweather took a beating in that fight. If not for Cotto running out of gas after the 8th round, he’d had likely won. Cotto badly gassed out at a point in the fight where he had Mayweather bloody and almost beaten.

Guerrero isn’t going to fade like Cotto did, and he’s going to throw a lot more punches than him as well. Guerrero doesn’t punch as hard as Cotto, but he hits hard enough to give his opponents a beating from the accumulation of blows. Look at what Guerrero did to Andre Berto in his last fight in November. Guerrero closed both of Berto’s eyes and had him looking real bad by the end of the fight.

Boxing fans said before the fight that Guerrero couldn’t punch, but look at how he knocked Berto down twice in the fight. The only fighter that had put Berto down before that was the big punching Victor Ortiz. Guerrero showed that he’s got the kind of punching power to hurt Berto, and if he can hurt Berto then he can definitely hurt Mayweather.

I do believe a younger version of Mayweather would handle Guerrero without too many problems, but Mayweather isn’t young anymore and he’s fighting so rarely now. By the time Mayweather gets back in the ring to fight Guerrero on May 4th it’ll have been 1 year since he fought last. You can’t do that at Mayweather’s age and still keep your sharpness. Guerrero has been staying busy, beating Berto and Selcuk Aydin last year. Guerrero is 7 years younger than Mayweather and in the prime of his career right now, whereas Mayweather is a fading fighter.
