Robert Garcia: We would like Marquez for Brandon Rios

marquez4534By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Robert Garcia says he’s hoping that Brandon Rios can fight Juan Manuel Marquez after Rios’s March 30th rematch with Mike Alvarado. However, Robert is wisest enough to see that as impossible due to Marquez facing Manny Pacquiao in a huge money rematch in September

Robert said to RingTV “We [Rios] would like a fight with Marquez, but we know he’s got a rematch with Manny Pacquiao in September and he’s a businessman.”

Rios should be trying to fight Richard Abril again instead of Marquez because too many boxing fans saw Rios’ controversial decision over Abril and they mostly saw him losing badly. Rios shouldn’t have walked away from that fight without facing Abril again, because it looks bad that Rios moved on without clearing up the controversy. .

Marquez isn’t going to fight Rios. There’s no money in that fight and it would be him doing Rios a HUGE favor if he were to take that fight. Unless Bob Arum gave Marquez big, big money for him to fight Rios after the Pacquiao rematch in September, it’s not likely to happen in 2013 or ever.

Rios isn’t a pay per view fighter, so there’s no market for a Marquez-Rios fight. Robert Garcia needs to be a little more realistic about who Rios can really fight. His chances opportunities at 140 are extremely limited unfortunately, and he should move up to 147 because there’s nothing or Rios at 140.

Rios can’t fight Golden Boy fighters Danny Garcia, Amir Khan and Lucas Matthysse, and those are the most popular fighters at this weight. With the Top Rank – Golden Boy Promotions problems in working together, it leaves Rios with little options but to keep fighting Alvarado while waiting for a shot against Manny Pacquiao in 2014.

Arum will likely give Rios that shot against Pacquiao just so he can keep the in house Top Rank fights flowing. Pacquiao isn’t going to be retiring anytime soon even if he gets knocked out again in September by Marquez. Arum will then match Pacquiao and Rios together at some point in 2014, unless Arum wants to put a 6th fight together immediately in early 2014 between Pacquiao and Marquez. I’m hoping Arum doesn’t do that immediately because it would be interesting to see how Rios does against Pacquiao.
