Pacquiao could fight Senchenko or Jessie Vargas on April 13th

vargas56020By Chris Williams: Top Rank is reportedly looking at matching their #1 fighter Manny Pacquiao against either former WBA World welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko (33-1, 22 KO’s) or unbeaten welterweight contender Jessie Vargas (21-0, 9 KO’s) next on April 13th, according to the Manila Bulletin.

Both Senchenko and Vargas are also being considered for a fight against Juan Manuel Marquez on April 20th, so it’s possible that whoever is left over after Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum make their selection will end up facing Marquez.

Pacquiao’s fight could take place in one of the following low tax countries: Dubai, Singapore or Macau. However, it’s unclear whether Pacquiao would still be taxed for the U.S revenue that he would be receiving from HBO pay per view. It would seem logical that this money would still be taxed given that the money is coming from Americans.

In that case, the low taxes that Pacquiao would be receiving would be just for the venue. To make a lot of money from that he would have to sell out a huge stadium or arena. I don’t know if it would be worth it if it’s not going to be a significant amount of money.
I think Vargas, #4 WBA, #9 WBC, would be a really tough/frustrating opponent for either Marquez or Pacquiao. While he’s not a huge puncher by any means, he’s tough to fight because he stays on the outside and jabs and moves constantly.

Vargas likes to clinch a lot when his opponents try to come at him to land shots on the inside. I think it would be a lot like Pacquiao’s fight with Tim Bradley. I know Vargas is one of the Top Rank stable fighters now, but I think he’s a really bad choice for either Pacquiao or Marquez.

It would be a fight where Pacquiao would have to chase Vargas while eating jabs all night. And when Pacquiao does eventually catch up to him, Vargas will grab him in a clinch. I know Pacquiao really respects Arum, but he should tell him to forget about fighting Vargas. Marquez should do the same thing because you don’t want to have to chase him around the ring and end up in a fight that will go a decision.

Marquez and Pacquiao will land the cleaner shots against a guy like that, but we’re probably talking about an ugly fight. Senchenko is the much better option because he’s someone you can land shots again and he’ll fix it up with. Senchenko, 5’11”, is kind of big to be facing Pacquiao and Marquez. I don’t like the idea of those guys fighting someone as tall as Senchenko, not that they would lose to him.

The idea is for them to look good, and Senchenko will try to box them from the outside all night. If all Arum is offering is Senchenko and Vargas, then by far Senchenko is the better fight in terms of winning without having to chase him the entire night. Still, I wouldn’t agree to fight either one of them if I were Pacquiao and Marquez.
